Sea of Thieves enters Season 21 with a free trial weekend, a new pirate-to-pirate signaling tool, and a sweepstakes timed to Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Rare is opening the game to non-owners for a Free Play Weekend running from September 17 at 15:00 UTC through September 21 at 17:00 UTC, with no Xbox Game Pass subscription required to join in. The timing lines up with the season's social-focused additions, giving new crews a chance to try Sea of Thieves before deciding whether to buy in.

The season's headline addition to Sea of Thieves is the Parley Pennant, a flag-box item that signals to nearby ships that a captain wants to talk rather than fight. Equipping it lets crews propose alliances, split up challenges, or simply compare tattoos with strangers met at sea. Players who lean on the pennant during the in-game Talk Like a Pirate Day event, running alongside the free weekend, earn a cosmetic reward called the Parley Proficiency Sails.

Rare and Microsoft Rewards are also running the Sea of Thieves: Golden Legends Sweepstakes from September 17 through October 31 in the US, Canada, Mexico, UK, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Entrants can download themed Bing wallpapers or spend Microsoft Reward points for a chance at a Golden Legends branded Xbox Series X console, a matching controller, and a year of Xbox Game Pass Premium, with extra consoles and subscriptions set aside as second-place prizes in each territory.

Reward points can also be spent on in-game Ancient Coins for the Pirate Emporium shop, where a limited-time Loquacious Figurehead item is on offer, and Xbox Game Pass subscribers separately receive a free Vociferous Speaking Trumpet between September 17 and October 31.

The rest of the season leans on established systems rather than a wholesale overhaul: regular Fight Nights and Bilge Rats Weekenders continue, the Custom Seas mode gains further expansions, and a refreshed seasonal reward track ends in a lantern cosmetic called the Flame's Light. Rare says the Sea of Thieves roadmap will also include bonuses tied to Xbox's 25th anniversary but has not detailed what those bonuses will be.
