Wing will fly Walmart orders to customers in the Denver and Seattle metros as part of a 2027 rollout, taking the two companies' drone delivery partnership to nearly 20 major US markets. Both cities are plans for now, not live services.
Wing says the partnership has already opened drone delivery to more than three million customers, in areas that include Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta, Houston and Orlando. The stated goal is more than 270 Walmart stores coast-to-coast, which Wing puts at over 40 million customers. Against those two figures, today's access covers under a tenth of the audience the plan is aiming for.
Wing frames the two new cities as a test of range. Seattle brings rain and Denver brings winter weather, and the company calls its footprint the largest residential drone delivery operation in the country, a claim it makes about itself. The announcement gives no figures on how often rain or snow will ground an order, so the climate argument stays a stated intent until the first months of service produce numbers.
The hardware is modest by design. Wing's fleet is two aircraft that it describes as among the lightest in the industry, and together they complete thousands of residential deliveries a day. They cruise at up to 60 mph and carry up to five pounds. The catalog Wing lists runs from trail mix and coffee beans to Halloween candy, electronics and allergy medications. A five-pound limit suits a quick top-up order better than a weekly shop.
Heather Rivera, Wing's chief business officer, said the new metros reflect how quickly people are adopting drone delivery. Greg Cathey, Walmart's senior vice president of eCommerce transformation, said Walmart stores put everyday items near the communities they serve and Wing carries them to homes in minutes. Jim Ferrell, the mayor of Federal Way in the Puget Sound region, welcomed the service as a new convenience for residents. No launch months, delivery fees or per-metro store counts came with any of it.
Once service reaches a neighborhood, eligible customers will see drone delivery as an option in the Walmart app and on Walmart.com, and they can also order through the Wing app. People in either metro can already join a waitlist on Wing's site to be notified when their address is covered.
