Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School heads to PS5 on November 5, and the sequel turns the first game's more linear structure into an open-world campus that players can roam between puzzles. The sequel ships with couch and online co-op from day one.

Art director Michelle Huttunen of Coin Crew Games says the campus is divided into distinct sections, each packed with quests and puzzles. The game is open to newcomers as well as people who played the original. The studio frames the sequel as a more fully realized campus than the first game, with characters, secrets and reasons to explore between escapes.

Two areas get the closest look. The Headmaster's Tower was among the first spaces the team built for the new visuals, and it leads back to the Headmaster's Office, where the first Escape Academy began. That room became the visual target for the sequel's upgraded art style. The Humanities Campus departs furthest from the original's 2D map. Part of it had to be rebuilt because the first game's story ended with the library burning down, so Huttunen extended the classical architecture of that library into a cozier district of faculty offices, classrooms and reading spaces. By her account the Science Campus is rougher and industrial, while the Arts Campus is colorful.

Making the map open was not automatic. Early versions of the Humanities Campus felt too open, Huttunen says, so the team added interactable landmarks, side quests and extra escapes. Puzzles are no longer confined to rooms; the grounds themselves hide them. Players cannot enter the Humanities Campus at the start, but a keyhole-shaped fountain visible from several vantage points keeps it in sight, and the studio scattered further keyhole decorations around the Academy for observant players to find.

That design leans on a particular kind of discovery: seeing something intriguing before knowing how to get to it. In co-op, which the studio supports across the whole campus and story, two players can spot different clues while wandering and bring them back together, something a fixed sequence of rooms would not allow. More updates are promised ahead of the PS5 launch.
