OpenAI Rolls Out ChatGPT Health to US Users 18 and Older

OpenAI is rolling out its Health feature across every ChatGPT conversation for U.S. users 18 and up, adding hospital records and Apple Health support.

OpenAI began rolling out Health in ChatGPT to logged-in U.S. users 18 and older on July 23, letting people securely connect Apple Health data and supported medical records so ChatGPT can reference that context in any conversation instead of only inside a separate health tab, according to OpenAI. The rollout covers ChatGPT's Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans on the web and iOS; OpenAI said Health is not yet available in Codex.

The launch widens a narrower health experience OpenAI introduced in January to a limited group of testers, which required opening a dedicated Health space to get the full benefit. OpenAI said more than 70 percent of that early group's health-related conversations happened outside the dedicated space, often while people were doing something unrelated, like planning meals, so the company removed the requirement to enter Health first. OpenAI also widened what can be connected: alongside Apple Health, users can now sync supported medical records from U.S. hospital systems, One Medical, and Function Health.

OpenAI said the models answering these questions have also moved on. GPT-5.5 Instant, available to Free-plan users, now performs on OpenAI's toughest health evaluations at a level the company compares to its frontier Thinking models. GPT-5.6 Sol, available to paid plans, is what OpenAI calls its strongest model yet for health, built to reason across complex medical details and explain them more clearly. OpenAI said every GPT-5.6 model outperformed GPT-5.5 on HealthBench Professional, an evaluation the company built with input from hundreds of physicians.

OpenAI said connected medical records and Apple Health data, along with any conversation that draws on them, are not used to train its foundation models or target ads, regardless of a user's separate model-training setting. By default, ChatGPT asks permission before using that information in a response, though users can choose to always allow access instead. Disconnecting an account deletes the synced data from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, though anything already saved in an existing chat stays until that conversation is deleted. OpenAI said memories are not created directly from connected records, though they can still be created from Health conversations that reference them.

OpenAI was direct about the feature's limits, saying ChatGPT "can still make mistakes and does not replace the care and judgment of qualified medical professionals," and urging people to check important details against their own healthcare provider. Physicians tested Health in ChatGPT ahead of this release, per OpenAI, and the company said it keeps running red-team exercises focused specifically on what connected health data ChatGPT is allowed to share with other connected apps.
