Ghost Recon Wildlands' newest update, Last Rites, is free and live now on PS4 and PS5, adding native 4K resolution and 60 frames per second on PS5 and PS5 Pro alongside a new story mission and a wide slate of customization options. Ubisoft detailed the release through a new developer interview with Ubisoft Bordeaux Creative Director Olivier Leonardi and Live Strategy and Analytics Director Yossef Benzeghadi.
The update's centerpiece is a standalone story mission set in a darker, more oppressive version of Bolivia, where the Ghosts run into Los Penitentes, a fanatical cult led by a new antagonist named La Llorona. Leonardi describes her as an "untouchable icon" whose masked followers carry out her vision of justice against the corrupt Bolivian government and its armed wing, Unidad, framing her as a wounded, betrayed figure rather than a straightforward villain.
Ghost Recon Wildlands also gains expanded player control well past the new mission. New Ghost Parameters let players toggle instant death or limitless revives, restrict themselves to one primary weapon instead of two, and choose whether unused ammunition survives a reload. New World and Session Settings hand over weather, time of day, patrol frequency, alarms, and jammers, plus an optional friendly-fire toggle for co-op groups. Difficulty settings now break enemy perception, endurance, and vehicle durability into separate sliders, a response Benzeghadi ties directly to years of feedback from the game's role-play-heavy community.
Ubisoft is also unlocking a batch of existing Ghost Recon Wildlands content for free alongside the new material: previously unreleased camos, past challenge rewards, and every Ghost War PvP class are now available through the in-game store at no cost. The update also ties into Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon's 25th anniversary with new Character Smith cosmetics and a hidden Operator Skin tied to finishing the Last Rites mission, while PlayStation Plus members separately get an exclusive La Llorona-themed skin, the P416 Micteca weapon, and a sunglasses cosmetic.
Wildlands shipped in 2017, and the size of this update signals Ubisoft still sees the open-world shooter as a live platform worth reinvesting in rather than winding down between mainline releases. Ghost Recon Wildlands remains playable through Ubisoft+ Classics or as a standalone purchase, and current owners can upgrade to the Definitive Edition, which bundles the base game with its Season Pass, Year 2 Pass, and four additional content packs.
