DLSS 5 Gets a Smaller, Faster Model as Hogwarts Legacy Adds It November 5

NVIDIA says its October DLSS 5 model uses 24% fewer parameters and 20% less 4K VRAM, with NBA 2K27 first on October 16 and Hogwarts Legacy on November 5.

DLSS 5 is getting a smaller, cheaper model this week, and NVIDIA says the change halves the GPU overhead of the September version while keeping comparable image quality. The October build trims the model by 24% to roughly 118 million parameters and cuts VRAM use at 4K by 20%.

The first beneficiary is NBA 2K27, where DLSS 5 launched last month. NVIDIA says the faster model reaches that game on October 16 for GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, RTX Spark laptops and GeForce NOW, lifting frame rates by up to 1.4X. DLSS 5 arrives on RTX Spark laptops the same day. The company also describes the model as 10X faster than at its March announcement and says it will ship by default in future DLSS 5 games.

Two multipliers are in play, and they measure different things. Twice as fast is the model's own cost; 1.4X is what a player sees on screen. Neural rendering runs as the last stage of the pipeline, after the engine has drawn its frame, so by our reading, speeding up that stage alone should not double the game's frame rate.

Hogwarts Legacy is next. A November 5 update adds DLSS Neural Rendering for GeForce RTX 50 Series, GeForce NOW and RTX Spark, and moves the game's other DLSS features to their newest versions. The open-world RPG already supports Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction. NVIDIA says developer Avalanche Software used the DLSS 5 SDK controls to tune the effect to the game's art direction. Where Winds Meet follows in late November. NVIDIA lists only RTX 50 Series hardware, RTX Spark and GeForce NOW for these launches, so owners of older GeForce cards are not part of this round.

A separate beta targets frame generation. Labeled Preset C in the NVIDIA app's override menu, the new Performance Mode swaps the second of the two AI models behind frame generation, the one that calculates optical flow for interface elements and ray-traced effects, for a lighter algorithm. It works on GeForce RTX 40 and 50 Series GPUs and RTX Spark laptops. NVIDIA reports speedups of up to 35% on a GeForce RTX 5060, in exchange for what it calls minor image-quality trade-offs.

Modders get DLSS 5 on October 23, when RTX Remix adds it alongside the new Performance Mode. NVIDIA previewed it in the in-development Fallout 4 RTX and Mirror's Edge RTX projects and says modders receive the same controls as developers, including masking parts of a scene and choosing a preset per object.

NBA 2K27 gets the smaller model first, on October 16, so it will be the first game where NVIDIA's 4K VRAM and frame-rate figures can be checked independently.
