The Conjuring: Unspoken arrives on Netflix on October 13 as a ghost hunt in which the TV shows the haunted house and the phone does the investigating. The game sits in the Conjuring horror universe and casts the player as demonologist Francesca Noakes, who works through an English inn by picking dialog options that steer the story.

The phone stands in for the ghost hunter's kit, per Netflix: an electromagnetic field reader, an infrared camera and a spirit box. The infrared camera lays a thermal overlay over the room, and a cold spot is the cue that something is there. That makes the second screen a working tool in The Conjuring: Unspoken, not a remote with a menu.

The Conjuring: Unspoken is set in the Red Lion Inn, which Netflix describes as a reportedly haunted place in England. A grieving family, the Coopers, checks in, and the usual trouble follows: dolls go missing, a daughter hears her dead mother whispering at night, a ballerina music box starts on its own. After a failed séance, the player has to free the family from Vinea, a demon that feeds on grief, and from Florrie, a ghost out of English folklore.

Netflix says no one needs to have seen the films. Viewers who know Ed and Lorraine Warren, the real-world investigators the series follows, will spot a few familiar faces, and the first movie dates to 2013. The franchise has since grown to four main films plus spinoffs such as Annabelle and The Nun.

Members in 17 countries can play from launch day: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the US. Brazil, India and Japan are not on that list.

The format carries a hardware condition. Netflix says every player on a TV needs a phone or tablet as the controller and that physical gamepads are not supported. An iPhone or iPad must run iOS or iPadOS 17 and have the Netflix Game Controller app, while Android devices need the Netflix app. A household whose only iPhone cannot run iOS 17 is shut out of The Conjuring: Unspoken, however good the horror is.
