Personal Intelligence with Gemini is rolling out on Android Auto, which lets drivers put voice questions to Gemini that draw on their own Gmail, Calendar, Photos and Maps data. Cars with Google built-in get the same feature later.
Google started the Android Auto rollout on October 20 and puts the cars with Google built-in version in the coming months. After a user opts in, Personal Intelligence can reach Workspace apps such as Gmail and Calendar, plus Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search. Google describes two jobs for it: pulling one specific detail out of an email, photo or saved place, and reasoning across complex sources.
In Google's examples, a driver heading to the airport can ask for the flight gate and whether the flight is on time, and Gemini answers both in one reply instead of sending the driver through a confirmation email and a separate delay search. Someone who photographed a car wash last week can ask Gemini to find it and start navigation. A request for an indoor restaurant along the route that fits the driver's usual taste returns a shortlist of places that suit a vegetarian driver, for example.
Google says a user's apps are not connected until the user turns the feature on, and it can be turned off anytime in Gemini settings. Anyone who already enabled it in the Gemini app keeps it in the car. In cars with Google built-in, personal answers appear only while the driver's phone is connected. Without the feature, navigation, music, calls and general questions keep working, just without tailoring.
Google began rolling Gemini out to cars with Google built-in in April, replacing Google Assistant through a software update for new and existing vehicles, starting with English in the United States. That version answers questions about a car's features from the owner's manual, though Google says availability and detail vary by brand and model. Personal Intelligence adds the driver's own account data on top.
Personal Intelligence is currently rolling out to eligible personal Google accounts held by users 18 and older, not to Workspace business, enterprise or education users. Google also excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
