WhatsApp group chat features are getting four additions that target the same problem, catching up on a busy group, and WhatsApp gave no rollout schedule. One is a new chat filter that shows every unread group chat where the user was mentioned or got a direct reply.
The filter counts @all messages as well as personal tags and direct replies, so a group-wide ping lands in the same view as a personal mention. Meta added @all in August to notify every member, including those who muted the chat, and in groups of more than 32 people only admins can send it. Members can still mute @all separately in notification settings, per Meta.
Pins get a longer life. WhatsApp says users now have the option to keep a message pinned forever instead of choosing a time limit up front.
Message history gains a second route. Earlier this year, WhatsApp added a toggle that sends recent messages to someone as they are added to a group. Now the same history can go out after the fact: tapping a member's name in the chat sends them the recent messages, and those stay end-to-end encrypted like personal chats. When WhatsApp launched message history in February, the sender picked 25 to 100 messages, admins could switch the setting off for their groups, and everyone in the group was notified.
Group status is the fourth addition. A user can share a casual status update with one specific group, so a running-club update does not have to reach the family chat. Every member can view it, react and add a status of their own, and entries disappear after 24 hours, the same as regular statuses.
WhatsApp also pointed to three tools already in group chats. A user can reply privately to one person so a side chat does not derail the main conversation. A poll can have its multiple-answers option switched off when the group needs one definitive result. Member tags, which Meta introduced in January, let someone appear as "Sam's Dad" in a parents group and "Treasurer" in a volunteer group.
