Xbox opened Early Access to the Gears of War: E-Day multiplayer beta today, giving players who pre-ordered the game or hold an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass membership a first hands-on look at Horde Siege and the reworked 4v4 Versus mode roughly two months ahead of the shooter's October 6 launch.

That Early Access window, confirmed by Xbox, runs through August 10 at 10 a.m. Pacific for anyone who pre-ordered on Xbox Series X|S, through Steam, or through Game Pass. A second Open Beta weekend follows August 13 through 17, open to every player on any eligible platform regardless of pre-order status, and both windows carry identical beta content.

E-Day is a prequel built by The Coalition alongside People Can Fly, rewinding the timeline 14 years to retell humanity's opening days against the Locust invasion, with young versions of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago forming what becomes Bravo Squad. That framing gives the multiplayer beta an unusual job: it has to sell a decades-old franchise's origin story through competitive and co-op modes months before anyone touches the campaign that actually tells it.

The mode carrying that weight is Horde Siege, a 12-player rework of the series' long-running wave-defense format: three separate squads now share the same battlefield, crossing paths, scavenging gear left behind by others, and converging on one final stand. Its lone beta map, Golden Quarter, is staged in the wreckage of Kalona's historic district, the same city where the single-player prequel opens. Versus, meanwhile, keeps to a tighter 4v4 format built for quicker, more competitive matches.

Xbox is dangling cosmetic and title unlocks tied to hitting specific milestones in either mode, all of which stick around after launch even though class progression and player level themselves reset, per the beta's official FAQ page. That page also carries a practical warning for PC owners: the client refuses to launch without a sufficiently new Nvidia driver installed, and frame generation is switched off entirely for the duration of the test.
