Gears of War: E-Day launched worldwide on October 6 for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam, and it joined Game Pass the same day. The Coalition's prequel drops players into the opening hours of the Locust invasion, with Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago fighting through the city of Kalona.
The game costs $69.99, according to Xbox, and one purchase covers console and PC through Xbox Play Anywhere. Xbox also says Gears of War: E-Day was built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, with 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second across the campaign and multiplayer on a compatible display.
The frame-rate claim carries no per-platform breakdown, so how a Series S or a mid-range PC holds that target will be settled by launch-week testing. Two-player split-screen in Gears of War: E-Day is console only, so PC players get co-op solely online.
Launch day was the second step. Xbox opened early access on October 1 for Premium Edition owners and Game Pass subscribers with the Premium Upgrade, and cloud play runs through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW.
The launch-day guide spends most of its space on mechanics, and the order is telling. Melee comes first: the opening teaches a metal pipe and the Snub pistol before the game hands over a gun, and the Gnasher shotgun, Longshot sniper rifle and Chainsaw Lancer each suit a different range. Blind fire from cover is back, caches around Kalona let players swap loadouts, and optional side missions often pay out weapon mods. A sharp audio chime marks a nearby collectible. A cover shooter that front-loads close combat suggests enemies built to close distance, which fits Xbox's description of reimagined Locust meant to restore dread.
Beyond the campaign, Gears of War: E-Day offers Horde Siege, which puts four-player squads on larger maps with Assault, Marksman, Medic and Breacher classes, and Versus offers 4v4 modes in ranked and social playlists. Online co-op, Horde Siege and Versus need a Game Pass tier that includes online multiplayer, sold separately, so for lapsed Gears players the extra cost is the subscription, not the game.
