DigitalOcean Inference Router is a managed model-routing service that automatically directs AI inference requests to the best-fit model based on latency, cost, and output quality tradeoffs. The DigitalOcean Inference Router now integrates with OpenCode, an open-source AI coding agent with over 160,000 stars on GitHub. The integration is detailed in DigitalOcean's announcement. The router is in Public Preview.

The integration removes manual API configuration from the OpenCode setup. Developers launch OpenCode, run /connect, choose DigitalOcean login, and see their Inference Routers in the model selection tab. Routers are addressed in API calls as "model": "router:your-router-name" using the standard OpenAI-compatible format. No new SDK, no Kubernetes cluster, and no GPU infrastructure is required to use the DigitalOcean Inference Router in this workflow.

The routing mechanism matters most in multi-agent coding pipelines where not every task justifies a frontier model. Route clarification, code formatting, simple lookups, and low-complexity steps can be handled by cheaper, faster models without a quality drop. The DigitalOcean Inference Router targets the right balance of quality, latency, and token cost automatically, reducing unnecessary spend in pipelines that always escalate to the most expensive model in the catalog.

Pricing for the DigitalOcean Inference Router is not disclosed in the Public Preview launch materials. The specific model catalog behind the router is also not detailed; which AI models are available and how the routing logic weights quality against cost remain open questions. Without those two data points, teams evaluating the DigitalOcean Inference Router for production use cannot assess cost at scale. The Public Preview status means the API contract may still change before general availability.

OpenCode was designed to avoid vendor lock-in by supporting multiple model providers, and the DigitalOcean Inference Router extends that principle from static provider selection into dynamic routing. Whether the routing quality outperforms a hand-rolled provider-selection rule against a specific workload is the practical question the Public Preview is designed to answer.
