Panasonic added a new ultra-wide prime lens to its L-Mount system. The LUMIX S 20mm F2.5 comes in black and silver finishes for full-frame mirrorless cameras, built for snapshots, landscapes and interiors where an extreme wide angle matters most.
A 20mm wide angle lets a single frame hold an entire room, a skyline, or a landscape stretching to the horizon. The F2.5 maximum aperture keeps handheld shots usable in dim interiors or after sunset without pushing a camera's ISO too high. Get close enough to a subject and the lens still renders a soft blur behind it, a trait uncommon at such a wide focal length. For video, Panasonic tuned the lens to suppress focus breathing and support fine aperture micro-adjustments during exposure changes.
Point the lens skyward with a compatible LUMIX body's live-view composite mode, and Panasonic says you can stack the night sky's star trails, or a street's passing headlights and taillights, directly in camera without extra software.
The lens is built to disappear into a kit, not dominate it. In Japan, the S-S20 carries a suggested retail price of ¥84,700 including tax (about $535) and ships in late October, according to Panasonic. It measures about 40.9 millimeters long and weighs roughly 142 grams, with dust and splash resistance, a minus-10-degree-Celsius cold rating, and a fluorine-coated front element that wipes clean easily. The lens also shares its length and filter thread with the existing S-S40 and the S-R1840 (when retracted), so filters carry over between them.
Panasonic hasn't said whether the S-S20 will reach markets outside Japan or at what price there. Photos shot with the lens will be on display at Tokyo Camera Club's 2026 exhibition in Tokyo, where visitors can try it themselves.
