PlayStation 5 Digital Edition gets a Midnight Black finish on November 19, and only players in Japan can use it. Sony Interactive Entertainment priced the console at ¥55,000 including tax (about $347 at the October 14 exchange rate), with preorders opening October 20 at Japanese PlayStation retailers and online shops.

The limit sits on the account, not just the sales channel. Like the Japan-only Digital Edition already on shelves, this PlayStation 5 works only with a PlayStation account set to the Japanese language and the Japan region. Sony lists the model number as CFI-2200B02S.

Sony says the core PlayStation 5 experience is unchanged, from SSD speed and 3D audio to PS4 backward compatibility, though some specs are customized for Japan. The box holds the 825GB console without a disc drive, a DualSense controller and the preinstalled ASTRO's PLAYROOM. A Midnight Black disc drive goes on sale the same day for ¥11,980 including tax (about $76), so buyers can add physical games later. The color is meant to pair with Midnight Black accessories already released, including the PlayStation Portal remote player.

Timing matters here. November 19 is also the date Sony's post gives for Grand Theft Auto VI, and the console's sixth anniversary falls a week earlier, on November 12. Sony's Japanese post also carries a notice, naming no region, that new PlayStation games released from January 2028 will be sold only as downloads, while disc games released before then stay playable. For a digital-only PlayStation 5 buyer, that leaves the optional drive mostly as a way to use older discs.

Sony is also attaching a warranty campaign. Anyone who buys a Japan-only Digital Edition by March 31, 2027 and applies for the campaign gets two years of coverage instead of the usual one, and the Midnight Black model qualifies. The post names no release outside Japan.
