ZincFive Launches Purpose-Built BMS for Nickel-Zinc Battery Cabinets

ZincFive launched a purpose-built battery management system for its nickel-zinc battery cabinets, adding built-in cybersecurity and remote fleet configuration.

ZincFive launched the ZincFive BMS, a next-generation battery management system built specifically for its nickel-zinc (NiZn) battery cabinets. The company says it engineered the hardware around NiZn's own charge and discharge behavior rather than adapting a platform originally designed for lithium-ion or lead-acid chemistries.

A battery management system is the layer that decides whether a UPS cabinet ages gracefully or fails without warning: it balances individual cells or trays, tracks state of charge, and flags a failing cell before it drags down the rest of the string. Because nickel-zinc charges, discharges, and ages on a different curve than the lithium-ion cells most commercial BMS platforms were built around, software tuned for lithium-ion can misread healthy NiZn behavior as a fault, or miss a real one.

The ZincFive BMS pairs a central ZincFive Controller with a distributed Tray Monitor at every battery tray, a two-tier design ZincFive says delivers high-resolution telemetry across an entire cabinet. Cabinets daisy-chain over dual Ethernet ports, and each Tray Monitor reads individual battery voltage and temperature over the isoSPI protocol, a setup the company says removes the need for third-party unmanaged network switches and cuts out an extra data-aggregation step before readings reach a facility's building management system.

ZincFive built encryption, authentication, and access controls into the BMS from the outset, alongside a redesigned interface for fleet-wide visibility into state of charge, voltage, time-series data, and alarms across multiple sites. The company says operators can remotely reconfigure a deployed system and push firmware updates without a site visit, and it is positioning the security layer as built in from the start to meet operational-technology (OT) audit requirements, rather than bolted on afterward.

The system also adds what ZincFive calls AI pulse intelligence in its BC 2 AI UPS Battery Cabinets, tuning the BMS to the high-frequency power spikes that AI training and inference workloads place on backup power. "The ZincFive BMS reflects everything we've learned from managing and deploying nickel-zinc batteries at scale," said ZincFive CEO Tod Higinbotham. The BMS ships standard with every BC Series cabinet and the NiZn Retrofit Kit; ZincFive did not disclose pricing or say whether cabinets already deployed in the field can be upgraded to the new hardware.
