Arrowhead Game Studios released the Devoid of Liberty update for Helldivers 2 on August 12, bringing four named SEAF squadmates, new Illuminate enemy variants, and a new sector to the game's Galactic map.

A new area designated "Devoid of Liberty" has appeared in Helldivers 2's ongoing galactic war, triggered by an Illuminate expansion. The enemies arriving there sport razor-sharp limbs and weapon types not encountered in earlier campaign zones.

The SEAF addition is the update's main draw. Four named Super Earth Armed Forces squadmates, each with a distinct role and their own voice lines, can now join players in the field. C. Zhang, the Squad Leader, commands the group and issues orders. STIMmothy, the Medic, carries a stim pistol and syringes to keep the team alive. A. Aaronson, the Rifleman, provides steady support with standard-issue equipment. B. Devaux, the Specialist, packs an MG-43 Machine Gun and an EAT launcher for the heaviest engagements.

In practice, you can order your SEAF squad to follow you to mission objectives or hold position while you complete them. A morale-boost interaction lets squadmates hug your Helldiver on command, a detail that fits the series' tradition of blending ruthless combat with satirical Super Earth warmth.

The free update also adds four new emotes and a fresh tier of veteran titles for Helldivers who push into the new sector. It is live now across all platforms at no additional cost.

What remains unclear is how well the new SEAF AI holds up under coordinated Illuminate pressure, and whether the faction's expanded presence in Devoid of Liberty signals a longer story arc or a seasonal event.
