The smart #2 brings back the brand's ultra-compact two-seater as a fully electric car, thirty years after the original concept appeared in Paris. smart showed the production version at the Paris Motor Show on October 12, and European orders opened the next day.

The smart #2 is 2,746 mm long and keeps the wheels-at-the-corners stance of the old fortwo, with a 6.95 meter curb-to-curb turning circle. Power comes from a rear-mounted 60 kW motor making 130 Nm, sending drive to the rear wheels through tires that are wider at the back than the front. The battery is a 35.8 kWh LFP unit, and smart quotes up to 290 km of WLTP range, a target value rather than a certified one. DC charging peaks at 65 kW for a 10 to 80 percent top-up in 20 minutes, and AC charging reaches 11 kW on Pure+ and above, while the base Pure is limited to a 7.4 kW single-phase charger.

Those figures point to a car built mainly for city driving, though smart says the suspension is tuned for the highway too. The engineering claim smart leans on is the suspension: a five-link rear axle it calls a first in the class, paired with a floor-mounted battery for a low center of gravity. It rides on the new Electric Compact Architecture platform and a Tridion Cell Evo safety structure, the latest version of the cell that has defined smart bodies since the first model. Driver assistance, including adaptive cruise control with Stop and Go and Highway Assist, is standard.

Pricing starts at €19,990 (about $22,400 at the October 13 European Central Bank rate of $1.1188 per euro), according to smart's ordering announcement, with the figure varying by country. In Germany the Pure costs €19,990, the Pure+ €20,990 (about $23,500), the Premium €24,490 (about $27,400) and the Couture Edition €25,690 (about $28,700). Each step up the smart #2 range adds equipment: Pure+ brings the faster AC charger and a heated driver seat, Premium adds a glass roof, heated seats and a seven-speaker Sennheiser system, and the Couture Edition, limited to 999 units in Europe, wears matte white paint with a gold-colored roof and 16-inch wheels. Inside, a 10.1-inch center screen sits beside an 8.8-inch driver display.

Buyers will wait a while. The smart #2 is still going through EU homologation, and smart says the specifications and range figures could change before approval, with deliveries starting only once that is done. Full market availability follows next year, and the online sales channels open in the first half of 2027, so early orders secure a car ahead of full availability, one whose final numbers are not yet certified.
